History of the Directory!!
Directories were, essentially, created because of man's need for organization.
It is well documented in psychoanalytic literature, that human beings constantly
need social gratification and fulfilling these needs affirms our purpose
and role we play in our own society. As a result of today's Social Conditioning, we prize possessions such
as iPods, mobile phones and money. So now we have established why we
value the things we do, we will now look at how it came about.
Human's have long established currency as a medium of trade. Before money,
there was gold, and before that there was grain. Somewhere along the historical
timeline, human's also figured out that organized descriptions of bartering
and trade meant that goods and services were easier to find and became higher in demand.
This informal form of bartering probably first arose between different tribes
over 5,000 years ago.
Consequently, many similar goods and services were eventually grouped together and indexed
according to a recognised system of ordering (for example, alphabetical,
numerical, most popular, most valued, etc.). At that time, hunting tools
and crops were probably the most prized of all.
These trading merchants further discovered that the benefit of these so-called
early forms of 'directories' was that the wider the range of goods and services that were
provided in obvious categories, the more customers would approach and become interested.
Soon, people offering directory listings towards the Middle Ages and forthcoming
would often receive a generous commission.
This is only a concise summary, but In a way you can still see how these
humble beginnings correlate to the highly Competitive Web Directories seen on the world wide web.
